Jonny Boy's CRRAZY game idea:
I started thinking of this after my "realism in games" post on the Video Game Discussion Group on facebook that I started.
Let's call this game, "The Legend of Jonny V" for now.
The game would be an Action/RPG.
When you start the game, there will be 2 modes:
"Prologue" and "The Legend of Jonny V".
Oddly enough, the "Prologue" would be the meat of the game play and story while the "Legend of Jonny V" would be the Climax of it all. Your progress through "The Legend of Jonny V" is almost wholly dependant on how you progress through the Prologue mode. Just for fun, let’s say that you decided to skip the prologue and jump straight in to The Legend of Jonny V.
Now let's say that the legend of Jonny V takes place in the year 1310. On one fateful day in 1310, something horrible happens to the world. I'm not going to hurt my brain trying to think of a full plot so I’ll just stick with the Clichés. Once this event occurs, your village comes under attack by a strange force. That is where YOU come in. You take control of your character and are thrown into the chaos. You’re character is a weak, lazy, nobody with little ambitions that just floats through life. You are startled by what is going on and are scared shitless. You grab one of your fathers spare swords from the weapon rack and you get ready to try your damndest to defend yourself. When these evil being break into your house, you take a pathetic swing with your sword and miss. Without any hesitation or effort, these attackers kill you quickly. Game over. Wait, what?!
The thing is, your character has NO experience what so ever! You think that your weak and pathetic character can just stop an invasion without any experience in combat?
That is where the Prologue comes in.
The Prologue would take place in the year 1300. 10 years before this crisis happens. You begin just as you did when you selected “The Legend of Jonny V”. You are a weak and inexperienced young adult. This time around though, you start making choices to better yourself. The game starts and your village is at peace. You always dreamed of adventuring out into the wild and being a hero. So maybe you decide to sign up at the academy for knights. You start training with a blade. You gain enough experience and prowess to at least defend yourself.. Then a “not so devastating” even happens in town. Say monsters start attacking. Using your learned skills with a sword, you dispatch the monsters. This will always be a co-op experience… you will always be aided by either NPC characters or Online Friends. When you lose all your health, instead of dying, an NPC comes to you and drags you away from the battle and help you back on your feet. You are penalized for falling in combat by losing experience and possibly more.
After the monsters are slain, you are sent with a small group of people (at least 1 NPC and up to 3 online companions) to find out why the monsters are attacking. You will slowly unravel a prophecy that will one day unfold and are caught up in an epic quest to get to the bottom of it and prepare for the inevitable chaos to take place 10 years later..
This Prologue in essence IS the main part of the game. The farther you choose to progress, the choices you make and the things you learn will affect how “The Legend of Jonny V” unfolds. You can stop playing the prologue at ANY time you choose and jump into The Legend of Jonny V. Now when the game start, it loads your progress from the prologue game.
Now when the catastrophic event occurs, you WILL know how to wield a sword (you will probably even have your own) and you will NOT be weak. You are know capable of defeating the attackers in your village and save the day. NOW the REAL quest begins! Only this time, you go at it alone. No NPCs to save you… if you die, you are DEAD and you restart the Legend of Jonny V from the beginning. So basically, the more you do in the prologue, the easier “The Legend of Jonny V” becomes.
The completionists may want to master the prologue and just be ready to HAUL ASS in the future and finish the game… The hardcore however may decide to stop the prologue sooner and go at the future with less, thus making the game more challenging to finish. It’s risky but would be rewarding.
So let’s say you go half way through the prologue. You gain skills, but you don’t quite learn what it is that is about to happen to the world. You would begin The Legend of Jonny V with the means to proceed, but you know nothing! And you are left to figure it out while racing against time to stop the end of the world.
If you master the prologue 100%, you know what is coming, you will know what to do when it comes and you will know how to destroy anything that stands in your way.
So if you think about it, the story climax might be MORE dramatic if you decide NOT to master the prologue. More people might die and it will be more taxing on your character. Your character might even end up having to die at the end by sacrificing himself after all. You never know!
The Legend of Jonny V’s events will take place on a set timeline. You will have say 20 REAL hours of game play at your disposal to stop the end of the world. If you fail, you fail. You can either kill yourself in real life or try and progress farther in the prologue and try again.
The prologue would be the meat of the game spanning 10 years, taking anywhere from 1 – 150+ hours of game play to complete depending on your dedication. Then you have no more than 20 hours to save the world in The Legend of Jonny V.
The thing is, your character has NO experience what so ever! You think that your weak and pathetic character can just stop an invasion without any experience in combat?
